D&D Technologies has developed the MagnaLatch ALERT, a combined gate latch and electronic alarm. The device offers a dual alarm system of flashing LED lights and an audible alarm to alert pool owners when a pool gate is left open.

The ALERT latch is designed so that on each entry or exit of a gate, a single beep is sounded. If the gate is left open, a second beep will sound after 10 s. After 15 s of the gate being left unlatched, the alarm siren begins to ramp up and LED lights begin to flash, providing pool owners with visual and audible alerts, even from inside the house.

The system is easily installed. The electronic alarm is powered by an integrated, replaceable battery, removing the need for wiring, electricians or special tools. By simply screwing the device onto the gate/fence, the safety gate latch and alarm system are installed.

Like all regular MagnaLatches, the ALERT model includes magnetically triggered latching, key lockable security (rekeyable by a locksmith to match house doors), a visible locked/unlocked indicator and a high degree of horizontal and vertical adjustment to ensure ongoing performance.

Not only does the MagnaLatch ALERT notify that a gate is not closed and secure, more importantly it warns that the gate is not properly latched. Until the latching mechanism is engaged, the alarms will flash and sound, even on fences where the gate may appear to be closed and safe.

Anyone who steps unwanted over the threshold of a property with a Peperosso atomiser installed can expect an immediate burning sensation as chilli paprika is sprayed in their face. The instruction booklet promises “tears and coughing” and “a lot of slime”.

“We usually talk about paprika as the most popular ingredient in our national cuisine,” says Erika Madlena, from the Hungarian company Umirs that makes the Peperosso. “But in this case it provides an effective and good value way of safeguarding your home from intruders”.

At under €500, the slick white gadget is at the cheaper end of the market at the Perimeter Protection trade fair, which is taking place in Nuremberg this week. Umirs, for instance, also sells a range of perimeter electric fence systems, which cost several thousand dollars per metre.

About 100 companies – all leaders in the field of “perimeter protection components”– are in Nuremberg, selling fences, gates, electronic barriers and much more besides.

Around fifteen secondary schools will be equipped with security gates in the frame of an experimental measure which will be then extended to a whole region declared French Region President Laurent Wauquiez, thus carrying out his campaign pledge.

“This measures aims at reinforcing security among secondary schools for today they cannot provide sufficient protection”, he said to the AFP (French Press Agency) after visiting Moirans secondary school institution (Isère). He wants these gates to be rapidly implemented: “in less than two months”. Moirans secondary school, as a leading structure, will be equipped with:”a gate and badge system that should not let anyone in”. Total cost of this project is about one hundred crore.

However, such iniative raises controversy as student unions claim it would take more than an hour and a half to get every student in. Besides, students gathering simultaneously “could potentially become a target”.

Australian Trellis Door Company’s (ATDC) smart shipping dock gates are an innovative method of securing factory loading docks, warehouses, hangars, logistics and distribution centres.

Unlike many options currently available on the market, ATDC’s smart loading dock gates are trackless, lightweight, and very easy to operate, running on a series of heavy duty bottom rubber castors. (www.trellisdoors.com.au/products/commercial-&-industrial-trellis-security-doors-&-grilles/s04-concertina-safety-screen-system)

These loading dock safety gates are slimline, compact and space efficient folding back to less than 15% of their expanded size with an additional hinge aside/pivot facility allowing these shipping dock safety gates to rotate completely out of the way when folded back so as not to obstruct loading or unloading of goods on to vehicles.

Whether emergency responders can get to your property in a time of crisis depends on whether the driveway gate installer that installed your gate knew what they were doing and provided a form of access for emergency vehicles.

In An Emergency

If they were one of the fly by night “companies” and disregarded the need for emergency vehicle access, then first responders will be left waiting at your gate while you are in need of their services, or they will strap a chain to your gate and pull it down.

Either way you are left to potentially watch your loved one’s distress because your gate installer did the project a thousand dollars cheaper than the reputable company that was going to install emergency access.

Emergency Access Basics

The type of access required is based on the local and regional requirements of your area first responders.

In some smaller rural areas, it is as simple as sharing a code for the keypad with the fire department.

Most areas, though, require the installation of a “Knox key switch” and/or a “strobe switch”. Some jurisdictions are requiring installation of devices that open the gate after receiving a command from the handheld radios in emergency responder’s vehicles.

Summing it Up

Regardless of the requirements, a competent quality driveway gate installation company, such as our partner installers, will be able to determine what you need and will include the cost of emergency access in their estimate.

Nearly three weeks after workers upgraded the automatic gates and installed payment machines at Bakersfield’s downtown parking structure, a Finance Department official said Monday the 28-year-old structure is likely back on track to pay for itself.

In a 10-day period that began Sept. 8, the city-owned garage collected $1,172, following a $136,951 upgrade that included new parking gates and payment machines.

This averages out to nearly $120 a day in revenue, Finance Director Nelson Smith said Friday in a memo to City Manager Alan Tandy, and at that rate, the facility is on pace to earn more than $40,000 in a year’s time.

If the trend sustains itself, Smith wrote, it will “more than cover the current General Fund subsidy.”

This is good news to City Hall because Bakersfield has spent $30,000 from the General Fund during each of the past two fiscal years, since June 1, 2013, to support the parking garage.

Bakersfield sold long-term parking passes to the 509-space garage, at $25 per month, but these generated only around $76,000 per year — not enough to cover its annual operating costs of $85,000 to $90,000.

It raised monthly parking fees to $30 on Sept. 1 and saw the number of monthly parkers actually rise 7 percent to 236. The city now charges short-term parkers $1 per hour after two hours, to a maximum of $10.

During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, which ended June 30, the garage earned $106,000 — $76,000 in long-term parking fees plus $30,000 from the General Fund.

But it actually cost Bakersfield $132,000 in the same period — $87,000 to run plus $45,000 in capital costs for the upgrade.

“It’s supposed to be self-sustaining, it just hasn’t been for quite a while,” Smith said, noting the structure might be able to support additional upgrades once it breaks even.

“If revenue continues to exceed that cost, we would have some options of maybe expanding the security guard services or expanding the automation components,” he added.

Councilman Terry Maxwell, who voted against the renovation over concerns about inadequate signage and raising parking fees, said the increased revenue was good news — but he’s heard from local merchants concerned that charging shoppers to park will hurt their businesses.

Like the name implies, a vehicle detection device’s entire job is to detect vehicles on either the inside or outside of your security gate and cause the gate to either open or stay open without the need for a gate remote or keypad.

The Basics

To let your visitors out of your gate so that they can go home, if you don’t have vehicle detection installed, you’ll need to give them a gate remote or ride along with them down the driveway to press your gate remote button, or have a keypad installed on the property side of your gate so that your guests enter a code to open the gate so that they can exit.

You may also use a telephone entry system to “call” the gate and send the telephonic “gate open” command to it via your phone. The downside to this option is that, if your guest stops in the middle of your driveway to call her husband to give him a long grocery list let’s say, the gate might be closed by the time she reaches it.

Vehicle Detection Loops to the Rescue

What are the Different Types of Gate Vehicle Detection? — Keeping Cars Safe from Damage
There are two main types of vehicle detection devices: vehicle detection probes and vehicle detection loops.

Vehicle Detection Probes

Want your visitors to be able to freely exit your gate without hassle? You might want to have a vehicle detection probe installed.

Vehicle detection probes are used only to freely exit (meaning, without the use of a device such as a remote or keypad) or freely enter an automated gate. Vehicle detection probes are not meant to be used as a reversing device.

If you’re wondering what they look like, probes are cylindrical in shape and approximately 12” long. They are placed 15’ to 100’ away from the gate, parallel to the driveway, and are triggered by a moving metal object which is typically a vehicle.

One of the downsides of a probe is that it can be triggered by a non-vehicle metal objects such as a bicycle or even a dog’s collar.

Probes are also prone to false triggers due to vibration. If you live near a busy highway, the vibration from large trucks could trigger the gate to open. Vehicle detection loops do not suffer from these problems.

Have visions of a herd of elephants crossing The Serengeti that you’d like to see emblazoned in bronze on the face of your driveway gate?

Know that you’d like a gate that expresses your unique style but have little idea of the options you can choose from?

There’s no reason you have to settle for an “out of the box” gate that looks just like your neighbor’s; and your neighbor’s neighbor’s; and… well, you get the idea. Your driveway gate can be an extension of your home’s architectural style or your decorating style.

Start Here

Start by perusing our extensive gallery of automated driveway gate pictures from around the world. This can give you a good idea of what can be done or help you narrow down your design ideas.

Tap in to Your Creativity

Use your imagination. There isn’t much that can’t be done. If it can be drawn, it can probably be built.

All gates start with a steel or aluminum frame. From there is where the fun begins. The infill of the gate can be pretty much anything. Tempered glass? Yep. Stained glass? Yep. Exotic hard woods? Absolutely. New modern stainless steel cabling with colored LED accents? Sure, why not. With the right frame and hardware, you could even have a gate that resembles a moving rock wall (like Batman’s Bat Cave).

There is nothing that can’t be done (at least we’ve never run across a design that couldn’t be made real).

A Scunthorpe school is planning to add steel to its security measures.

A 2.4m high metal barrier around the premises will counter break-ins and thefts and ensure pupils’ continuing safety.

The new security fencing is planned at Oasis Academy Parkwood, on Plymouth Road.

The main gates for pedestrians and vehicles will be “automatic powered” and include an intercom fob system with controls housed in a brick enclosure near the gates.

A statement submitted in support of the school’s application for planning permission says: “The existing boundaries are approximately 1.2m high to the majority of the site perimeter with the exception of the north and west boundaries which are 1.8m steel palisade fences.

“The lower boundaries provide no security to the school premises. Access can be easily gained by climbing the boundaries.

“There have been numerous breaches of the boundaries, resulting in break-ins and thefts from the school.

“Of primary importance is the safety and welfare of the children when on the school premises and to this end the academy policy is to install 2.4m security fencing to all of their sites.”

The school’s principal, Tracey Norriss, told the Scunthorpe Telegraph that fencing all needed replacing and would ensure “safe-guarding.”
